Yesterday, Suma, Ravi and I met with Corporator Doddaiah in his house at Vijayanagar regarding Mr Somnaths case. We had a long and heated argument with him which he tried his best to monopolise, and also handed over this letter ( translated into Kannada ) and another document about the history of Indian street dogs and the laws and rules for their protection, and of those who tend to them and other street animals. Sir Sub : Attack on Mr Somanath of Vijayanagar We would like to register a strong protest on behalf of law-abiding citizens of Bangalore regarding the cowardly attack and assault on Mr Somanath. We would like to reiterate the fact that a citizen is guaranteed fundamental rights under the Constitution of India. Also, the Directive Principles of State Policy exhort citizens to protect the natural environment and have compassion for all living creatures. Several court rulings have granted protection to dog feeders while taking strong action against those who intimidate and harass them. The Animal Welfare Board of India has issued several notices and directives to the Police and to the general public regarding feeding of dogs, birds and other animals which is legal and considered on par with rendering a community or social service. We request you therefore, to issue a statement to the Press and the general public expressing regret for the unfortunate, deliberate and repeated attacks on Mr Somanath, with a declaration that this will never happen again in your ward and that the offenders will be prosecuted with maximum penalties under the law. Sincerely, Ravi Narayan, Nevina Kamath, Suma N and others.
