Yesterday a couple I was touring with told me they had been flying all over Italy because they were afraid travelling by train would be to uncomfortable and difficult. I know it can be intimidating if you have never done it before, but there is nothing to worry about - its really easy, I promise! And it certainly is the most hassle-free option to get around. These are the simple steps to ensure a good journey: 1. purchase your tickets in advance. Check out the website trenitalia (English version available!), select your starting point and destination, time you would prefer to leave and number of passengers, pay by credit card and print your ticket; 2. arrive at the station 15-20 minutes before your departure time: you will see large electronic boards indicating the track the train will be arriving at; 3. proceed to the track and refer to your ticket to read what train car you will be sitting in (its indicated as coach on the ticket): as you walk down the platform, you will see numbers posted as to which spot on the track the trains specific cars will stop at; 4. once you board the train, refer to your ticket to find your designated seat. The seats are spacious, there is space above and below to put any luggage you may have, and there is even Wifi, a restaurant car, and bathrooms. Of course all this applies to the Frecce, the fast trains you are most likely to use as a visitor to Italy - the commuter trains are quite another matter! All the announcements on the train will be both in Italian and in English, and there are electronic signs posted in the cars. Here are the Italian names of the most popular train stations: Roma Termini - Firenze S. M. Novella - Venezia S. Lucia - Milano Centrale. Have a good journey!
