Yesterday, a friend challenged my thought process regarding my post on gender inequality as it could relate to fall out from an exceedingly uncomfortable encounter with a passenger of mine while driving for UBER. He questioned, could the same situation not happen to men? Could a man not get a poor review on his work because he turned down a womans advances? At the time, on a grand total of two hours of sleep over 36 hours, I didnt apply critical thinking skills. I was just really confused by the line of questioning, and I do believe men put women in more danger with negatively received advances such as this. However, I am proud of neither my lack of critical thinking nor my confusion. After thinking about it I realized hes completely right. While gender inequality is an issue, and men DO pose a threat to women (in Louis C.K.s words, men are the greatest threat to women- see funny clip below), perhaps I incorrectly identified that as the main issue in my uber-passenger debacle. Maybe, the real issue, or at the very least a parallel, equally important, issue, is entitlement in our society. The answer to not getting what you want is not to take it out on a service provider, or another person in general. Dont fault someone for being honest. Dont lash out because you didnt get your way. Dont contribute to our being a society of entitlement. Just go hit on someone else. youtube/watch?v=zDh4qk1Tl8k To my friend: thank you for challenging my thought process. I deeply appreciate it. Now, back to my status quo of non-polarizing Instagram photos of our dogs being adorable.
