Yesterday after work, I stopped into Fareway, to grab a few groceries. I walked past a gentleman in the cracker aisle. I heard him say What you do is so important. I turned back to see if someone else was in the aisle with us. No, it was just me. I told him Thank you. He said he had read my name tag, and couldnt help remembering how our organization, allowed his mother to stay at home until her last day on earth. I listened as he talked of how his mother wanted to die peacefully from her own bed, in her home. He said my sisters who cared for her, did so with compassion, smiles, laughter, and allowed her to keep her dignity at the same time when it came time to help with the more private moments of her care. He stated he was an orderly some 40 years back and cherished the 4 years he was able to make a difference in someones life during that time. He talked about his love of helping people and wanting to make a difference so he became a doctor, and how important a humble bedside manner is. He was one of the first people to take the CNA course when it was developed. He feels every person in the medical field should be required to spend time doing home health care/CNA work. Gives everyone direct hands on experience and helps to build character. My smile and tears came as it meant so much to hear how important what I do is to others. I asked him if I could give him a hug. He obliged, told me he loved hugs, and that I should go home and know that I do make a difference even for those people who might not be so nice at times. To never doubt what I do and to continue making that difference. I couldnt help but walk around the store on cloud 9 and realize that this is why I do what I do - to make a difference. It might not pay a lot, but what I get out of this job is so much more rewarding than any amount of money could ever replace. It is a passion -
