Yesterday gave a workshop on Management as Spiritual Sadhana at Salone dImpresa, a periodic business conference on innovations in business just outside of Venice. Was taken aback by how passionately many of these executives and CEOs took to the idea of re-examining the conventional view of economics that views labor simply as a cost to be minimized at all costs.Labor is the lifetime effort of a human being and I asked them how many of them could put a price on their own life work. It is not a commodity; it should seen as an offering in service to the greater welfare of humankind and the world. Even mentioned Marxs critiques of the conventional concept of capital and Thomas Pinkettys evidence for the truth of that analysis. Compensation should be uncoupled from a quid pro quo exchange for labor as a commodity and should be an offering to support the life of a person and a family. My father must be looking down from the Packers game in the sky thinking, What has become of that child?!
