Yesterday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day I went to see - TopicsExpress

Yesterday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day I went to see Selma. The video shots of Montgomery, my home town, brought back memories for me of the racially segregated mentality that surrounded my life through my childhood and teenage years. I always feel a certain sentiment and connection with others during this time from MLK day through February where we are all remembering times of staunch racism. A subtle connectedness that disappears in March and throughout the year as those who are not black forget and build back up the fear based barriers in their minds of ethnicity and race. And throughout the year black people dont forget. It is in our veins, and the collective subconscious, the pain of decades of being dehumanized, enslaved and killed because of the jealousy and fear of our brown skin and strong features. And I am reminded daily be comments, body language, and the avoiding glances behind the eyes. And yes even in Maui. Still room for more change.
