Yesterday night i was working on Dave VJs transcript for the #unstoppabledoc. When i read this paragraph i went back to re-read the intro of my Bigger Than Hip Hop because we were expressing exactly the same concept, with the very same example and (more or less) words: we used the example of Chuck Ds lyrics and how they were instrumental in spreading knowledge on black history n resistance. Hip Hop brought me to libraries and book stores (there was no google back then) with the sole goal of learning more... On my side, those lyrics led me to a radical stance which became my life. From there i started thinking about my argument with R. Christgau on PEs overall impact and i thought i should do a book on this, on the impact Public Enemy had and still have in the USA and around the world, a tribute to the baddest hip hop group ever ! Below i simply pasted Daves words: ...because I never knew anything about black history, and from listening to Public Enemy I then found out more about people like Rosa Parks, Malcom X, yes I’ve heard about Martin Luther King but I didn’t know anything about him. You know, when I read Malcom X’s autobiography and I’ve seen the film as well, you realize what kind of person that person really was. But it was because of Hip Hop records I kept on hearing their names, and I was like “who is this person?” I didn’t know whether I was going to read the whole thing, you know Hewey P. Newton and all these people. So what I did was I went and bought the books... Dave VJ - transcript from the interview for the Unstoppable: a documentary about the roots of Hip Hop in London.
