Yesterday speech:of the Comptroller general of d Nigeria immigration service:::: We Lack Manpower, Equipment To Man Nation’s Porous Borders – NIS Christiana Esebonu — March 7, 2014 The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) yesterday said it lacked the capacity, manpower and the necessary equipment to efficiently man the nation’s porous borders in the face of the Boko Haram insurgency. Interacting with journalists in Abuja yesterday, the NIS comptroller-general, David Shikfu Parradang, said even though the Service was totally committed to securing the nation’s borders, it lacked the relevant technology to monitor and man the borders as it should. Parradang said the Service would like to have the nation’s boundaries fenced and have all sorts of communication gadgets around the country, but doubted if NIS had adequate number of men and resources to man the nation’s extensive land space. “It is against this backdrop that we have designed a practical measure to tackle the issue of porous borders. We have designed what we call ‘Border Patrol Corps.’ We have also got the approval of the honourable minister of interior on this plan. But we need to give the officers sector-based training. We are almost at the conclusive stage of the plan. “We are going to have an initial border patrol corps of about 1,000 officers. After the training, we will deploy them to the border control posts across the country. But we are not recruiting 1,000 officers specifically for the border patrol corps; we will be mopping them up across the various units of the Service,” he added. Parradang also hinted during the interaction that applicants who applied for employment with NIS in 2013 would be made to take aptitude test on March 15, 2014, as part of the recruitment procedures, adding that information on the short-listed candidates, time and venue of the test would be announced in due course. He assured that the Service was working assiduously towards a successful conduct of the aptitude test in line with the approval and directive of the the interior minister, Comrade Abba Moro. He further stated that the Service also had the mandate to monitor the movement of expatriates into and within the country, to ensure that only those with valid travelling documents entered Nigeria. « Copied from leadership newpaper online
