Yesterday the latest issue of Sky and Telescope arrived, thanks to a gift sub from my brother Willard. In the first few pages I found several scientific problems: 1) Our super-sentivie sensors on Mars have not been able to detect any methane, though it is the most abundant hydrocarbon in the solar system. Nobody knows why. 2) When you fly over a mountain the gravity should increase, because there is more mass. But when you fly over mountains on Titan, the largest moon of Saturn, the gravity actually decreases! Nobody knows why. 3) Scientists thought they understood our Sun. But new observations indicate that the Sun has at least two circulation cells, instead of just one. Now they dont understand the Sun anymore. Im glad I study mathematics because, though the problems may be difficult, when they are solved they generally stay solved!
