Yesterday was Kathi Cox McClure Day, the birthday of my dear friend of at least seven of my nine lives. As part of my newspaper job walkabout through the U.S., Cathleen and I followed Kathi and her late husband Tim Chavez from Oklahoma City to Utica, N.Y. to Nashville. And with each move our friendship deepened, mostly due to Kathis grace and generosity. Weve laughed together -- a lot, at the same old stories and jokes (sound familiar, friends?). Weve cried together through many trials, the death of dear friends, my mother and ultimately Tims passing. Her grace, character and love -- love above all things -- has sustained my family and hers through some tough times. She has always made room for me and my family. Kathi teaches me so many things. She reminds me of my mother for how she raised children on her own through all lifes challenges. She reminds me to appreciate my wife, my life, my children, this day. She has been a role model for Lucille as she has developed a love of writing and learning. She has loved Brooks like he was her own son. Kathi has the gift of slowing down, being still and keeping her eyes open for lifes surprises. She knows that God is in those moments. So today, I give Him thanks for Kathi, and for Hank McClure -- the husband who brings joy to my beautiful friend. I love you Kathi.
