Yesterday was Remembrance Day. Its a day we set a side to - TopicsExpress

Yesterday was Remembrance Day. Its a day we set a side to remember the tragedies of war. To remember those who fought to keep our world free for all of us, those that are still fighting and those of service. It is to remember all whom were affected by the war and the struggles the faced while going through it and the struggles they faced in their lives after. Each of my grandparents were affected in their own way. On my fathers side his adopted mother worked in an ammunition factory during the WWII sending artillery shells to help them while she waited for her husband to return. My grandfather fought in the war, from the records and medals my father found he fought in D-Day and countless other battles. When he returned home he never spoke of the war, the people he met, what Europe was like. He never said a single word about anything or any of his experiences while he was there and took it with him when he passed away a month before I was born. I never got to meet him and thank him, but I do every year on Remembrance Day and throughout the year when I think of him. We have recently found out that my fathers real parents moved to Canada after the events of WWI. His father fought in it but as to what extent we are still finding out. On my mothers side my grandfather, when he was young, was smuggled out of Germany in a whiskey barrel to Switzerland because he was half Jewish half German. He spent the year growing up on the border of Switzerland, he used to tell me how there was nights where the sky was so lit up from bombs and explosions that it was as bright as the day always. He gathered metal from the rail tracks to sell to help his mother provide for their family. I dont know what happened to his father as of yet. My grandmother, during the start of Japan invasion of China found the village she was attending school in was one of the first places to be capture during Japans invasion. She and her family spent the entire war in a Japanese prison camps, Ive heard many stories of how it was like but know that I have yet to hear everything. From her trauma of what took place there and after she has a form of mental disorder which troubled her throughout her life. She fought through it, had moments that werent as good as the others. My grandfather, even though there were hard times has stayed with her throughout. They are still together and I hope to ask them so many more questions and hear more of their life stories over time. Their love guides me. They are only a few of many, many peoples stories. They are only bits and pieces of their stories. We should always pay our respect to veterans, young and old. We dont know what they have faced and should thank them for their duty. The following is a song Ive listened to every year for remembrance day since I was young. I listen to it sometimes throughout the year too. It is an amazing song that I would like everyone to hear for its sake and the sake of our past. It revolves around the story of three men who fought in WWI at Vimy ridge. This story is unfortunately something that many would have gone through similar pains. Please listen, and always remember. https://youtube/watch?v=lryRLRNkKG8
