Yesterday was a Pender Slow Food day with vengeance. Thanks to the terrific wind storm, Islanders were with out power for most of the day. Some people have generators, but for many of us it means stoking up the wood burning stove, and using our pioneer cooking skills, hauling water as our wells are out, and as dark falls, finding the flashlights and candles. We were warm and cosy though the power was out from mid morning till 11pm. However pumpkin and carrot soup was the order of the day, Bread rose beside the stove and was cooked on top in a make shift oven. I place the bread pan on a wire rack on the cooking surface and upending a large pot over it. Works like a charm. As evening fall the table is set with candles, the wine opened and the conversations flows. A great way to end the day whether or not the powers on. And heres a toast - to those intrepid BC Power crews who work in the dark , the wet, and the nastiest of conditions to get us up and running again. Thank you.
