Yesterday was a very interesting day politically. We had the defeat of a government lead motion; We saw Maria Agard responding and clearly up some misrepresentations as presented in a nation report and we had the contractors’ response to Mitt Kelly. For those coming in late, here are a few highlights from the Mitt Kelly performance report. On Sunday we read about the get tough Minister. Minister Doolittle will soon be making “tough decisions about builders contracted by the National Housing Corporation (NHC)to construct houses but failed to complete their projects.” Then the next paragraph was classic contradictory Mitt Kelly. “Questioned by the SUNDAYSUN yesterday about the number of housing projects which appeared to have come to a standstill, Kellman said: “Those projects are not at a standstill. I have spoken to some of the contractors and I have told them that those who can’t deliver, we would do what we have to do.” One can interpret this to mean the projects are going ahead but the contractors just aren’t doing anything. “He added that Cabinet might soon have to meet to make a decision on those “who cannot fulfill their obligation”. The “tough decision maker” became a poodle again, as he put the responsibility squarely now in the lap of cabinet. Meanwhile the contractors not only reported for duty but reported on his duty. Hear them “Come again, Minister Kellman, and bring an apology and our money with you!” “What the minister should have told the public is that for all the years Michael Lashley was Minister of Housing we never had a problem getting paid. We did the work, the valuations were done and we got our money quick time. “But since the general election and since Kellman was appointed Minister of Housing and Lands we have not been paid once — not one single time. I am not exaggerating when I tell you that no work of any consequence is taking place at any of the sites simply because the contractors don’t have the money to continue.” Well there you have it, the report card of the Doolittle Minister. May God help us.
