Yesterday we discussed why Elsa receives a rabies vaccine. We talked about the risks of the vaccine vs the risk of the disease. We watched videos of animals who had contracted rabies, then we found one with a human who had it. He learned that if you show symptoms it may already be too late to treat it. It also is a very good way to reinforce do not touch strange animals. We then discussed animals, like possums, squirrels and small rodents like rats, mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, and chipmunks and then lagomorphs, such as rabbits and hares and how they have not been known to cause rabies among humans in the United States. Some diseases are a nuisance and mean a few days of ick. Some are deadly or crippling. Its important to be informed and make choices on accurate information. We have wild animals here who carry it. If we did not then maybe we would not need it. He agreed that Elsa gets a rabies vaccine.
