Yesterday we had our second Bicycle Safety 101 class – first and foremost we need to thank Donnetta Tungate who was responsible for securing the funds, from a Grant she wrote, to make the class available to 12 participants free of charge and to allow for a lead instructor from the League of American Bicyclist to travel to Campbellsville to teach the class – second a big thank you to Dr. Jim Moore who provided the locations for the class on the campus of Campbellsville University – he was also responsible for providing lunch free of charge in the Universities’ cafeteria – this was a great opportunity for Taylor County residents who enjoy riding their bikes throughout the county and city to learn advance skills in bicycle safety: learning the bicycles parts – how to adjust the bike to your needs – how to do a pre ride safety check – how to do maintenance on your bike – learning about the proper clothing and accessories – how to make yourself visible – how to handle your bike in the safest manner while riding – leaning rules of the road and other environments – and learning hazard avoidance maneuvers – and many other aspects of riding in a manner that allows for maximum enjoyment – this class also allowed for Jim Moore and myself (Tim Ramsey) the opportunity to assist in the teaching of a class since we became LCI (Lead Cycling Instructors) – assisting with this class allows us to conduct our own classes in the future which will give more individuals the opportunity to learn the valuable skills this class provides – I want to congratulate all those who attended Saturday’s class – I was very impressed by the riding skills they demonstrated during the practical sessions on their bicycles and during the group ride out on the road – and I will echo the final statement that Mike Galbraith, LCI made to the class “this is one of the best group of riders he has had the pleasure to teach since becoming an LCI instructor “ Finally I want to express my admiration to Carol Pike, Susan Wise, Kathy Curry, and Laura Tungate for demonstrating outstanding riding skills during our group ride – they handle every riding scenario with impeccable accuracy that allowed for an extremely safe group ride -- Tim Ramsey, LCI
