Yesterday, we had the first significant accumulation of leaves in the yard since Fall arrived. Kalkidan headed out to the yard as she waited for me to run errands and she walked through them and kicked them around, just like youre supposed to do with piles of leaves in the yard. How did she know? Another inborn trait. The fall rains brought out the earthworms today. I pointed one out to her on the sidewalk and she screeched and jumped away. I explained again it was a worm, not a snake, and it was good for the dirt and lived in the ground. Her forehead was creased like she was trying to grasp that. Since it got colder, shes been running the space heater in her room and OPENING THE WINDOW. Weve got to work this out. She loves the windows opened. Most days she has gotten up in the morning and opened the windows, even when its cold. They seemed to all stay open all the time in Ethiopia, so I guess thats what shes used to. I discovered she can do jigsaw puzzles. Wayne and I worked one with her two nights ago thats a 165 piece map of the US and its pretty complicated. Yesterday she got it out on her own and did the whole thing by herself. She brought the atlas and the wooden puzzle to the table to use as a reference for the states and started in the middle and did the border last, which is the opposite of how most people work jigsaw puzzles. I sold tickets to OKLAHOMA at PTHS today at Tilghman during lunch hours, so I took Kalkidan, of course. She is always a hit with the students : ) The ones who know her from Cason and MichaelEllen talk to her and make over her, but the ones who dont know her also are charmed by her. The girls loved her cool rainboots today and would tell her how cute her Hello Kitty headband is. And you know whats amazing? Kalkidan has been here 74 days now, and has not been sick once. All this strange food, being around hundreds of people, and not one bit of sickness. Think what we are like when we go abroad (generally). Most Americans will get sick at least once in a trip over a week long. I know her health is at least partly a testament to our good sanitation systems, but its got to be mainly from her own resilience. I cant imagine the shock her system has endured, but its held up just fine. Thank you, God, for that.
