Yesterday, we posted a link to a story by a member of the Menstrual Cup Fan Club. In the comments, we got a question about concerns some may have regarding the possibility of IUD expulsion as a risk of cup usage. We asked one of our staff physicians, and this is her reply: At this time, according to a 2012 study by Wiebe in the journal CONTRACEPTION, there is no evidence that IUDs are frequently dislodged or inadvertently removed by the use of a menstrual cap, or tampons. Cap manufacturers recommend the cap be carefully removed by breaking the suction with one’s index finger, and IUD manufacturers advise women always check for the string’s presence (and whether it’s substantially longer, suggesting possible partial expulsion) after each menstrual cycle - or monthly if there is no bleeding. The link to the study is below!
