Yesterday, we shared the story of how Kathrine Switzer was nearly pulled out of the Boston Marathon in 1967, which barred women from officially participating for over seventy years until 1972, and the fact that the womens marathon was not a part of the Summer Olympics until 1984. Marathon running, however, is far from the only sport that women have been excluded from in the Olympic Games and the much wider representation of girls and women in sports today is largely due to the efforts of trailblazers and activists such as Switzer. After decades of campaigning, women will have the opportunity to participate in ski jumping for the first time this year.
