Yesterdays helicopter exercise was cut short just as the crew of Rescue 177 HMS Gannet were briefing our volunteers. The alarm was raised and Rescue 177 - Gannet’s call-sign - was scrambled. The crew of the Preswick based Sea King were called to assist with a medical emergency in Scotland. Before the arrival of Rescue 177 our volunteers at St Bees were on hand to welcome the sea cadets from TS Bee in Whitehaven and show them around the lifeboat station and our lifeboat. The sea cadets were also planning to get a closer look at HMS Gannets Westland Sea King Helicopter. Unfortunately this, like our planned combined exercise, will have to wait until the next time - not too long hopefully. Deputy Launch Authority Marcus Clarkson said, “ This valuable training exercise with Rescue 177 gives our crews the opportunity to practice winching & pacing. We would like to thank the crew from Rescue 177 for all their help over the years with this training.” Casualties can’t easily be lifted from a stationary vessel so practice for helmsmen & pilots in pacing (keeping both the helicopter and lifeboat moving at the same speed to enable a safe lift) in sometimes challenging conditions is important. We look forward to welcoming back the crew from HMS Gannet Rescue 177 very soon.
