Yoga Basics: Yamas and Niyamas Understanding the first two steps of yoga – yamas (rules) and niyamas (regulations) – is like accepting the rules of a game before playing the game. When these basics of yoga are firmly in place, the next steps – physical postures (asana) and breath (pranayama) become more effective and we steadily progress towards the other, more advanced levels of yoga. In this workshop we will explain and discuss the ten rules and regulations of yoga to offer students a perspective on how they may enhance their learning, practice and teaching. The instructor. Dr. Abhi Ghosh is a scholar, teacher and a practitioner of bhakti-yoga for more than twenty-one years. He has been trained at Calcutta and Jadavpur universities in India, Oxford University, UK and The University of Chicago and has also spent considerable time in various monasteries in India. He believes in the essential need to balance the head and the heart, analysis and experience, the pursuits of the mind and the calling of the soul. He has travelled India, Europe, Central Asia, Middle East and USA over the last nine years sharing his ideas and practices with hundreds of individuals.
