Yoga Therapist or Yoga Teacher? © EquiLibrium Thai Massage & Yoga Therapy - Bloomington IN A yoga teacher is a teacher, one who enables a student to learn the art and skill of yoga and increase their ability in said art/skill. A yoga therapist is a practitioner, with training encompassing several aspects of yoga: Physical applications, diseases and their causes/symptoms, range of motion and biomechanics, anatomy, philosophy of yoga, contraindications, correct/incorrect applications. A yoga therapist first needs to be an experienced yoga teacher with a clear, articulate and focused manner of teaching that is open and aware both to the state of mind and physical state of their client/patient. That teacher, with commitment, time, extensive training, and in-field practice can then turn their skills and knowledge to becoming a yoga therapist and eventually helping individuals with specific health conditions, disability or chronic pain. Teaching yoga is not yoga therapy. As example: A professor in a medical field is integral to a medical students training and that of gaining knowledge in the medical field or theory of medicine, yet that same professor does not profess to do surgery or treat patients. However, a professor may very well be a surgeon or physician as well as a professor, having gained --through time, learning, experience -- the skills and knowledge necessary to safely and correctly help a patient. Practice without right knowledge of theory is blind. This is also because without right knowledge, one can mindfully do a wrong practice.__ Krishnamacharya ............................................... equilibriumassage/#!yoga-therapy-yoga-cikitsa/c1664 equilibriumassage/#!yoga-therapy/ckpq
