York police received a report that around 6.30pm on Friday 3 October 2014, the driver of a white van spoke to a 10-year-old boy on Bellhouse Way in York. The boy was walking along Bellhouse Way when the man pulled up and told the boy that his mum had sent him to pick him up. The man did not get out the van, but spoke to the boy from the window. The boy then asked the man questions before running away from him. Police officers are appealing to the man in the van to contact them and explain his actions. They also want to hear from anyone else whose child has been approached in this way. To date officers have not received any other reports of a white van approaching children. Officers are carrying out extra patrols in the area and have praised the boy’s actions. A police spokeswoman said: “Child abductions are very rare, however, encouraging your children to be stranger aware is good practice. “The boy did the sensible thing in this case and ran away from the van before telling his parents who then informed the police. It’s important that any other parents whose children have also been approached, get in touch with the police.” To pass on information, please call 101 and speak to the Force Control Room.
