You HAVE to vote for So-and-so. Thats our only hope. If you didnt vote, you lost your right to say anything about politics. I hear these sort of statements during election years, and they seem to imply that voting in elections is THE way to influence politics. Yes, its great to vote for a good candidate, and voting in elections is a way to influence politics, but its not the only way! Americans can also influence politics by paying attention to politics and pressuring those in office in the non-election years. In Jesus parable of the unjust judge (Luke 18), the widow didnt throw up her hands and say, This judge is unjust; Ill wait until elections roll around and campaign for a better judge. Rather, she persisted in pressuring the unjust judge, until he said within himself: Though I fear not God, nor regard man; Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. (And yes, political involvement in non-election years takes more energy and more time fighting for issues and principles than promoting images and personalities for a few months or so out of every few years. I wonder if one reason why some spread the idea that voting in elections is the only way to influence politics is to excuse their political slumber in non- ~ election years.) ~ Hosanna Myers
