You Tip of the Day: Spot Reduction: Here is the bad news, spot reduction is a myth. You cannot train one part of your body to be smaller. In fact if the nutrition youve had while that part grew large stays the same you are very likely to have a larger area. Here are the facts: 1. Fat is generally mobilized on the body as a whole. If you lose 2% on your triceps youve most likely lost that same ratio in your waist. The difference is that we carry more body fat in our centers to insulate even in a healthy way. It is more noticable to see a loss of body fat in the extremities for that reason. 2. Muscle groups that are trained with an open diet and with enough protein will tend to get larger. That will happen by gaining lean body mass and body fat at the same time. There are limiting factors for how much lean body mass you can gain(mostly nitrogen balance, protein intake and testosterone for both men and women). So the fat will continue to accumulate well after after the muscle has stopped coming. Heres what to do: 1.Train your body as a whole. Start with large muscle groups and get to smaller muscle groups less and later. 2. Be sure you have the appropriate amount of cardio to counter act your diet and attack stored fat. 3. Train in a smart balanced fashion. If you dont like your tummy the secret is probably not crunches but may well in fact be squats and lunges. 4. If you feel you are too big then restrict your diet, control your high-glycemic carbs, calories and be sure to keep your protein high and frequent. Your battle is actually to hold on to the muscle mass while you lose the unpleasant body fat hiding it.
