You all need to read this article from wed the 14th of jan. in Cache Valleys Herald Journal. I just have the paper version and cant find it on their hjnews. Probably need to subscribe. But anyway maybe someone has it and can post it or I can scan and host it somewhere: Here is a summary: There was an interesting article in Wed Logan Herald Journal by Richard A Anderson former vice president of Hewlet packard who holds engineering degrees from USU and Standford entitled. No Sound Reason to restrict EPA-Certified Wood Stoves. In the article he makes the point that NO an NO2 are produced when natural gas is burned and both are highly reactive. Both are precursors to PM2.5 which is the problem air pollution. In Cache valley winter these NOx gases will combine with the abundant airborne ammonium gas to form the dangerous ammonium nitrate. I n a study at USU 80 to 95 percent of the PM2.5 in Cache Valley red air was found to be ammonium nitrate. He goes on to say that the 2.6 grams of stove ash (smoke, etc) produced by EPA stoves does not contain the precursors to form ammonium nitrate. In addition, though wood burning produces trace amounts of the oft cited dioxins , furans, etc. , all they precursors are also present in fossil fuels but in higher concentrations. After all where did fossil fuels come from. His conclusion is that for Cache Valleys situation at least, epa wood stoves actually produce less harmful pollution then similar BTU natural gas. I am not a scientist but want to see the DEQ refute his science with sound science.
