Workshop: Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson and the Civil War Ministrante: Prof. Éric Athenot, da Université Paris-Est Créteil. 1º Dia (03/09) – Whitman, Dickinson and the Civil War – War Poems O professor discutirá a tradução de Whitman para o francês e a influência do poeta no verso livre, o qual a crítica literária considera ter surgido naquele momento. 2º Dia (04/09) - ‘For the Union Dead’: (Re)imagining the US Civil War” A aula abordará a Guerra Civil Norte-Americana sobre uma perspectiva cultural, envolvendo a leitura de filmes, quadros e poemas. O professor concentrará o workshop nos poemas Drum-Taps de Walt Whitman e nos poemas J409, J426, J444, and J582 de Emily Dickinson. Abaixo segue uma pequena biografia do Prof. Éric: Éric Athenot has just been hired as professor of American Literature by l’Université Paris-Est Créteil (UPEC), where he will teach courses on American Literature, and Translation Studies. He wrote his Ph.D. dissertation on Robert Lowell, in 1995, and has published several articles on this poet. He turned his attention to Walt Whitman in 1998, when the institution then employing him asked him to teach a poetry class to third-year students. Since then, most of his research has been devoted to Whitman. On top of writing articles and giving papers in France and abroad, he has written a small book on the poet (Whitman, poète-cosmos, Belin, 2002), has carried out the first French translation of the 1855 edition ofLeaves of Grass (José Corti, 2008), will publish a translation of Whitman’s American Primer, and Collect in the coming year, and has been invited on several occasions to speak about the poet on France-Culture, the French public radio station devoted to general culture. In 2007, along with scholars from Europe and the Americas, he founded the Transatlantic Walt Whitman Association, whose seventh annual week was held in July this year at Universität Bamberg, Germany. In March 2015, at UPEC, in association with Cristanne Miller (SUNY, Buffalo) Éric Athenot will organise the first international conference devoted to Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson. He also works on contemporary American prose writers such as Richard Powers, Rikki Ducornet, and Gary Lutz.
