You can tell me that we we have the highest dropout rates. You can remind me that we live in some of the most impoverished communities. You can tell me that we have the highest percentage of HIV and AIDS. You can tell me how unfortunate it is that we kill off each other everyday due to Black on Black crime. But please do not tell me that this is ALL our fault. Please do not blame all of our oppression on us. Please do not act like you do not have a role in why we always seem to get the short end of the stick. Please dont act like institutional discrimination is not real. Please DO NOT TELL ME that we live in a post-racial society because we have a Black President. Because you will be very wrong. In less than one month, numerous Black people were wrongfully beaten, shot, and/ or killed at the hand of the police. You will probably never hear these names. But they will ring loud in our community. Because now every Black man and Black woman will continue to not feel safe or protected by the people that are here to protect and serve. So take a look at these names, and be aware that there is a face to them. That these are real people. With real families. Real names. And real futures that were taken away, not because they had a gun, and were trying to attack the police. But because they were BLACK. Theres no need to try and make it sound pretty.
