You cant hold a sneaky congress down.... We knew the USA FREEDOM Act passed this May was a stripped-down, gutted version of the reform bill it was meant to be. We didnt realize the Act would help the NSA collect even more phone records. Thanks to a played-down provision in the bill, phone companies will have to provide technical assistance to help the NSA collect data -- meaning we just traded less landline collection for bulk access to the cell phone records the agencys been dying to get its hands on. Under the guise of further protecting privacy … the universe [of call records] will be exponentially larger than what the prior system was, Sen. Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat, warns. Will you join us in calling on the Senate to close this loophole and give us the reform we were promised in the original USA FREEDOM Act? PETITION TO MY SENATORS: We call on you to close the provision in the USA FREEDOM Act that forces phone companies to help the NSA spy on cell phone owners, instead giving us the reform we were promised in the original USA FREEDOM Act.
