You completely remake your childs bed after every draw and med to make sure the staff didnt leave wrappers and caps in the sheets. You have mastered the art of sleeping upright in a chair for weeks on end. The nurse lines you up with your childs meds and schedule for the night because theyre extremely busy. Your childs future is presented to you in the form of percentages and statistics. You have the medical supply store phone numbers on speed dial. Your heart drops into your stomach every time you receive mail from the insurance company or hospital. You force a smile and recite Im okay :) because you dont have a choice to be anything else. You put your child in a full hold and sweet talk them, kissing their forehead when theyve had enough and try to tear the catheter from their arm because you know how bad it hurts to get a new one put in. You have a box of toothpicks on hand to clean boogers out of your childs cannula because the new supply is one more day out. You choke back tears when you see other parents taking their kids home and know its a combination of joy and jealousy. You carry a medical binder with info about past surgeries and hospital stays so you can answer questions for the next doctor. And you have an emergency backpack stocked with the important things you forgot to bring last time, like a second copy of their favorite movie and lotion because youre sick of the hospital lotion smell. We are the Moms of miracle babies. Our experiences are not the same, but we feel it all over again when it happens to another.
