You don’t need to take our word for it. Just listen to Rep. Norton’s message (see video, above), which she left on a lobbyist’s voicemail demanding money. Norton describes the committees she’s worked on and the taxpayer money she’s spent – and then makes it clear that the lobbyist had better play with her: “I was, frankly, surprised to see that we don’t have a record, so far as I can tell, of your having given to me, despite long and deep work.” Norton tries to dress up her shakedown by saying that she has “obligations to raise funds.” No, she doesn’t. Now that she’s in Congress, Norton has an obligation to represent her district, the American people, and the constitution. She has no obligation whatsoever to put the strong arm on lobbyists in Washington, D.C., demanding pay for play.
