You gotta read this one! :) Jim. Please see the feedback recently received from a Biker Down attendee Hello just a quick note of thanks, On 21st August 2013 me and five friends were invited to participate in some training with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, namely the Biker Down training evening and we did it at Malpas Fire Station in Newport. The course gives you a basic insight into accident scene management and 1st response first aid & at the end of the evening we were each given a basic first aid kit. We all agreed the training was excellent & highlighted some areas of motorcycle riding that we didn’t realise we needed reminding about !! Little did we know the training we received would be tested within 4 weeks. I regularly ride in Europe and was taking part in a classic motorcycle rally in Northern Spain where all of the bikes were at least 33 years old. On this particular day we were on a high mountain course miles from anywhere when I misjudged a right-hander, crossed the white line and was aiming for a serious looking crash barrier. I laid the bike so low in an attempt to make it around the corner that grip was lost at about the same time as I ran out of road and slammed into the barrier........stopping dead. I was glad the barrier had stopped me though because the drop was about 300 feet on the other side ! I found myself looking up at two of my friends who had also been with me on the Biker Down course asking me “ can you move your toes, move your fingers, can you hear me, do you feel warm anywhere, so and so stop the traffic around the corner, so and so call the emergency services” etc, etc, I thought I was on the set of casualty or something! At the top of my left thigh there was a gash 4 ½ inches long that was wide open. Somebody suggested that we wrap a neck-a-chief around it and call 112 straight away. Fortunately I had my Biker Down first aid kit with me so the boys cut off my armoured jeans with the scissors supplied and held the large trauma dressing in place with the triangular bandage, both items also supplied in the kit. While this was going on the road was being carefully managed by my friends & some other fellow riders to allow plenty of warning to other road users & 35 minutes later the emergency services arrived and I was whisked off to hospital. So, all in all Id like to say a huge thank you to Marc Bolton & the fire-fighters on duty at the fire station that August evening for the training they gave us. Even though I was the patient because of the training we received we didnt panic, we followed our training and got through the crisis. Best Regards Alwyn
