You have to admire Peters grand gesture. He alone among the disciples stepped forward to defend Jesus in the garden. He drew his sword and went to work. He had said, I am ready to die or go to prison for you. He had swept his hand over the the other guys there and said, Though all these forsake you...I will not. He got between Jesus and the Temple guard and swung for the fences. I doubt that Peter thought, Im gonna see if I can cut off the High Priests servants ear. His intent was more likely to cut off somebodys head. So there was Malchus screaming and there was Peter with a bloody sword likely hyperventilating. Everybody is frozen in shock and Jesus steps forward and heals Malchus ear. Jesus undoes Peters grand gesture. Peter puts his life on the line and Jesus makes it like it never happened. I have to say there have been times when I put myself out there...making my own grand gesture and the result was nothing. I did my best and it went over like a lead balloon. Im learning though...living the faith life is not about what I do for God but what God does for me. Jesus doesnt need my defense. He wants my obedience. Even Jesus struggled to get that in perspective... Matt. 26:39...O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
