You know I woke up this morning thinking about how the Roman Empire collapse was brought on by debt and fiscal policy. At the beginning of their power the Roman currency was gold and silver coins. As the politicians needed money they would recall the coinage, melt it down and then alloy it with cheap metals and then restrike the coins with 1/2 of the gold or silver content. By the fall of the empire the coins had less than 1-10th of 1 % gold and silver...inflation and debt toppled Rome. In 1964 our coins went from 90% silver to 40%...by 1972 they dropped to almost 0%...our currency was backed by the gold and silver held in Fort Knox...today our currency is backed by the good faith and promise of the US government. Feeling warm and fuzzy yet !
