You know, a lot of folks like to talk smack about the cafe i work at, and thats fine. On many levels, the cafe is flawed. Still, for what we do there, I think we do a pretty good job. Rarely do you find a cafe as homely, quirky and bend-over-backwards-y that serves a full coffee bar AND makes really good, versatile food from exclusively LOCAL produce, meat, baked goods, etc. Like, no, were not perfect, but were far from the butt of jokes that people make us out to be. We cater to a HUGE variety of people, work with groups in the community, provide a platform for many folks to express themselves, YET PEOPLE STILL WANT TO TREAT US LIKE CRAP. Id understand if the criticism were about appropriation or criticism (and I dont know, the owners, as problematic as they are, have lived in this neighborhood a long assed time, donate to charity, hire almost exclusively out of west philly, etc.) but come ON! How many of you honestly care if a barista was mildly grumpy to you? Or just...whatever, there wasnt enough capers on your bagel? The work lode here is practically impossible, and I guarantee that each and every customer complaining about the place would have NO idea of how to help us improve, would never EVER cut it working here, and are, in general, screwed as far as their personal priorities and crusades are concerned. I mean, why dont YOU come and work here for a day, see if you dont appreciate being able to vent about asshole customers, some of whom have threatened our very lives (yes, its that deep), all for a couple of thankless tyrants; see if YOU dont get pissed after the third table in two hours tips you $3 on a $50 bill. If you can make it through ONE HOUR without wanting to destroy the planet, I will give you props and you can talk shit about my place of work alll you want. Just know that I absolutely cherish, am proud of, and stoked on all of the interesting people ive met, the friends ive made through working here (both employees and customers) and being able to serve my community. People are highly entitled these days, but just like... come in, hang out, enjoy your bagel and coffee and roll!
