You know how you see some nostalgic movies, where part of the story includes a historic event… a sporting event, or a famous concert, or something that gives the audience a feel for the times and a nostalgic connection with the characters ? Well I witnessed what seemed like a nostalgic moment live. The blackhawks run in the playoffs recently is probably the most exciting four weeks in sports Chicago has seen in a long time … and people are going to remember where they were when the hawks won the cup in the final minute and sixteen seconds of game six. In between the second and third periods that night I went for a walk in my neighborhood. I passed by little gatherings where neighbors watched the game on tv’s in their garages, I saw at least ten Blackhawk banners hanging from homes, a group of twenty somethings (covered in tattoos and Blackhawk jerseys) drinking beers and taking a smoke break on a front porch, and I could hear the game (announcers in between periods) the whole time I walked because everyone had the game on in their homes. Anyway, I passed this one house that had two hockey goals leaning up against the garage door in the driveway. So I looked up and saw the lights on in one room, the rest of the house was dark, and I could see the walls in the room were covered with the Blackhawk’s emblem and posters of Blackhawk players. There was a tv on and a young kid (maybe twelve years old) was running around his room (I think he may have been pretending to be skating) as he watched the tv. I’m pretty sure he was alone. Too bad, he looked so excited up there but had no one to watch the Stanley Cup with… still… I’m gonna bet he remembers that night for the rest of his life. It really felt like I was watching a movie.
