You know, the Telethon over the last few years was almost unwatchable. But I miss it. Not the later ones where they were propping Jerry up with stagehands, but the "good" ones. The ones with Ed McMahon predicting the total and being amazingly close. Staying up all night with Jerry (when he did stay up all night). When you’d see real talent on the show. Not the bloated Tony Orlando and Dawn’s of the entertainment world still singing the same two hits he had 30 years ago. But the “Good” ones. The fact that it has come to a two hour “Special” on ABC is just weak. With 8000 cable channels needing content, you have to think SOMEBODY could produce a good 24 hour telethon for MDA. Can’t you see Ryan Seacrest picking up the baton? I could see him hosting the MDA Telethon 2.0 with some great live guests. Just please keep the Kardashians, Charo & Louie Anderson away from my new Telethon. I miss being invested in the process. You’d stay up all night to watch that tote board. That guy who’s name no one can remember from the Fire Fighter’s association bringing bigger and bigger checks as the show went on. You’d phone in $20 or $30 bucks and now you were on the team! Now you wonder how much are WE going to raise this year? Some guy would come out and spin plates on 10 sticks to help keep you awake. You hung in there because you just knew one of the Beatles were going to come out about 4 in the morning (it never happened but it might have). That’s the Telethon I miss. As far as I know, they haven’t found a cure for MDA or for aging stars. But rather than shitcan the whole idea, could someone please make a slicker, cooler MDA Telethon 2.0? Labor Day isn’t the same without it.
