You know the way your heart can be broken before you leave the house? Just as I had posted my last, almost upbeat post I was chatting to one of my fellow hospital visitors and she told me of the sad passing of little Hiba. I told you about Hiba in a post last week. She was 13 and had been suffering from nerve damage apparently from Phopherous bombs (check them out they are illegal in bombing of civilian areas) from a previous upsurge just a very short time ago. She was able to see and hear but not move and she was always on a ventilator. I would talk to her when she was awake and asleep. I am sure she could hear me but of course not understand a word of what I said. I hope she could at least recognize caring tones. Her mum Samira spent every day by her side as well as helping all the new patients and looking out for their needs as they arrived in this scary new reality. She would wave and smile at me and the other visitors and always seemed to have a positive outlook despite the circumstances. I went on Thursday evening to say goodbye to Hiba and Samira as we thought she was going to be transferred to a different facility. Her friends had been out in Ramallah buying special leg supports for her for the journey. I was sad she was leaving but thought it was to a better facility. I am so sad for her and her mum today. I am so angry that this pain will continue like this for so many families. Friends, do not let this campaign stop. Do not let the quiet of a ceasefire lead you to believe suddenly things are ok. These children should never be forgotten. RIP Hiba.
