You know what? We all hear the statistics, everyday - about how are Peoples are the highest percentage of this and that (usually bad). I often wonder about this; about how they get these numbers in the first place. I am not saying that we are in a world of shit in some cases - However, that is not the doings of our own - Our people are suffering from the B.S that the government, and at times, its citizens have thrown at house through their genocidal actions - the evil molesters and all the rest! BUT! still I often wonder how they come to these conclusions ..... Growing up on my Rez, we always got these zhaganaash people that came out to do the many censuss that they do, and often they were young college/University age peoples. In my personal experience We never filled out the census that they were pushing - many times even before they reached the porch, they were told to take a hike. There response was the usual B.S - It is illegal, YOU HAVE TO FILL THIS OUT BY LAW ... We never did, and usually responded with a F.O and go get them then! They (pigs) never came. So I wonder how they come to these numbers at the end of the day. I personally know many people from my Rez. that told them the same things .. F.O! Another thing that bothers me is the fact that ANYONE can come off the street and claim they are Anishinabe - people who are not NISH can walk into a hospital and claim they are NISH on the forms they fill out - No questions or proof of status required! So I wonder how they come to these conclusions! The young punks who come to our Rezs through-out Nish Country with their Census dont get NO action from most of the people, Im sure - so do they stop at the end of the road and fill them out themselves, or does the government request that they go ahead and fill them out if the people dont participate (which would be illegal in itself, but we know they [government] have committed a lot worse) .. If our children growing up constantly hear negative shit concerning them, us - then that surely will have an effect on them mentally and physically! Is this what the government is trying to accomplish? I wonder! Our leadership (AFN) should be conducting their own census, and recordings - just to see if WE - the REAL Injuns - are really in that bad of shape, like all their numbers suggest! I know personally from all the craziness I see here in the city concerning being NISH - that most of these people that walk into Anishinabe Health and all the other organizations ARE IN FACT NOT INDIAN AT ALL! Our own people running these organizations dont say a damn thing about either - for fear of the funding being cut due to complaints from the ones claiming they are Indian .. Or you get the Indians that just learned they were Nish, and now are super Nish themselves - Many of the complaining that I hear up here, is not coming from the Nish who grew up on the Rezs - its the ones who say they are, but have no status, and dont look, act like they are even Nish to begin with ... Its just the popular thing to say - for the free services .etc .. Every Rez on Turtle I sland should conduct a study, or census type thing to really get to the bottom of these statistics ...HMMM
