You know whats wrong with Child Protection as it stands in NSW? Every three years when you get re-certified for first aid, you get in there and the emphasis is very definitely on saving lives. They talk about prioritising what is most important, they get you to practice - and most importantly, you are reminded that a person who does their best to save a life is doing better than the person who does nothing. They make sure that you know that youre not likely to get into trouble. With child protection, so much of the emphasis is on the policies and procedures. A massive edifice of rules and regulations is created, and there is a perception created (whether by design or by accident) that if you fail to make sure that every detail is up to scratch, you can get into trouble. Some groups will definitely opt to NOT provide services for children so as to avoid any possibility of screwing up. Its also very easy to see a person feel so intimidated by the reams of paperwork that the apparently safe option may appear to be to do nothing rather than report an incident. Only . . you can get in trouble for that too. What we need is a greater emphasis on people doing their best to protect kids. We need to be told by the system You wont get into trouble for this. Do what is best for kids, rather than Get everything right or face the consequences for failure.
