You may have heard that the Cheeki Rafik a yacht and its crew of four experienced British sailors has been missing since last Friday, the 16th. According to reports, it seems the boat started to take on water on Thursday of last week before contact was lost the following morning around 600 miles east of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. A search operation by American and Canadian aircraft and merchant vessels was quickly organised but this was regrettably called off yesterday morning. I share the deep concerns of the families of those sailors - one of whom is a constituent of mine - that whilst the efforts of the U.S. coastguard have been exceptional so far despite difficult circumstances – the search should resume given improving search conditions, the training the men have received which increases their chances of survival and to simply give them the best possible chance of surviving. I’ve contacted the Foreign and Commonwealth to press this point and I hope they do everything they can to encourage the coastguard to restart the search.
