You may have left us exactly 30 years ago, to this very day but your passion, enthusiasm, integrity, knowledge and that never-say-die attitude that you have imbued to all who have known you will live on forever. I used to watch you train the national football players in 1977, at the old Jalan Besar Stadium, as my former school, Victoria, was sited next to this grand old dame then. The way you parted your very distinctive creed to the players also had an impact on my classmates and I, watching from the stands. You made them recite the pledge and sang the anthem so many times that I finally found meaning in those words and lyrics. My deep sense of patriotism, I dare say, started there and then. Your team brought football fever in Singapore to its highest height that year and yours was the original and only Dream Team in many people’s books, the Class of 77. You always said that what good is a footballer or even a person if he is not fit. That’s why your players had to run at least 60 rounds along the parameters of the stadium, before proper football training began, with the ball. Those words stayed in my system since I first heard it and that’s why I am still running three times a week, come rain, shine or hailstorm. As far as I am concerned, you will always be the living legend of Singapore football. They should have erected a statue or at least name part of the new Sports Hub, up and running next year, in honour of you, if I had my way. May you always rest in peace Uncle Choo Seng Quee and I for one will always remember the greatness that you brought to this nation, through football. Thank you.
