You may have seen in today’s Nation (page 6), that I am calling for a Senate review of the controversial Media Bill. There are two reasons for this: First, the Bill will have implications that will affect everyone including at the county level. With certain counties wishing to manage their own media, it is important that this discussion be allowed in order to touch on this component. Second, and particularly in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling vis a vis the way that the Senate and the National Assembly relate, it is essential that the Senate register its input BEFORE the Bill is taken to the President for rejection or assent. Whereas there are elements in it that are subject to misinterpretation, there is no smoke without fire. Bottom line? We need to ensure that no draconian items slip in in violation of the democratic rights that Kenyans have worked so hard to protect.
