You may use your own pen to mark your ballot paper in the upcoming Scottish independence referendum ! But as Helen says >> Ballot papers are counted at immense speed and a narrow biro line is harder to spot and may actually lead to votes being miscounted. Bring a thick black pen if you must, but otherwise make a clear X with the pencil with enough pressure to make it obvious if its been rubbed out.
