You might be aware that included in the announcement by the government last week re : Irish water, was a provision that would require the local authority (county council) by law,to recover any amounts outstanding from local authority tenants to Irish Water. This would make the county council a debt collector for a private company. This is clearly outrageous, the`councils relationship with tenants is private and is as a housing authority and not a debt collector. Many thanks to the many people who called me and expressed your anger, I am very happy to say that I proposed and debated a motion today at the Monthly Meeting of Galway County Council, seconded by Cllr James Charity to say that Galway County Council Objects to this proposal and will not accept it. The motion was successful and I would say that Galway County Council must be the first local authority in the country to reject this which is a big blow to the latest reincarnation of Irish Waters attempt to gain acceptance. How disrespectful and dismissive is it to try and use a housing authority to browbeat tenants into supporting Irish Water. Everybody has a free choice. There was very strong support from all the Independent Councillors especially Cllr Karey McHugh ,but in fairness , the other councillors across all the parties did not like this development from Irish Water either. Irish Water will have to respond.....this is a serious problem for them . Hopefully other councils will follow suit.
