Kibera, Nairobi Kenya Shining Hope for Communities combats extreme urban poverty by linking a school for girls to community services for all as a pioneering model ready for replication throughout Nairobi’s slums. Our work has been featured by President Clinton at the Clinton Global Initiative, by Nicholas Kristof in the New York Times, by Chelsea Clinton on NBC, among other major media outlets. Shining Hope is looking to hire a Country Director to manage its pilot site in Kibera and also lead its expansion plans across Nairobi’s slums. This is a high-level and very senior management position responsible for both operations, strategy and in-country development. This position reports directly to the CEO. Key Responsibilities: Management and Strategy • Manages site manager(s) to ensure that organizational goals and deliverables are being met. • Provides leadership for SHOFCO’s strategy, vision, mission and values at grassroots, country and national levels • Works closely with the Operations Director, CEO and COO to lead the strategic development and growth of all Kenya programs, with afocus on scale up over the next 5 years. • Ensures that structures and systems adhere to SHOFCO’s standards. Supports service delivery and management to ensure coordination and efficiency between all country programs • Supports and holds management accountable for deliverables of their programs and staff Program Development • Ensures programs are developed and implemented in accordance with SHOFCO’s larger goals • Supervises managers and ensure that their staff areachieving program targets and play a key role in new program design and implementation • Works with site managers and program officers on thedevelopment of annual program work plans. • Works with program officers, site managers and the Operations Director in setting annual goals and budgets; developing and refining associated metrics for measuring impact 175 Varick Street, New York City, NY 10014 (860) 218 – 9854 Page 2 of 3 Operations • Works with Operations Director, ensure implementation and monitoring of operational policies and procedures • Promotes teamwork between program and operations staff, as well as between different site leadership • Builds capacity of local staff to report efficiently on their programs and plays a key role in the reporting process for both internal and external purposes. • Monitors adherence to rules, regulations and procedures. Development & Partnerships • Promotes the organization’s vision, mission and core values among partners in the region • Develops SHOFCO as a partner of choice for major local and international donors • Liaises and develops networks with government, non-government,partners and donors promoting an understanding of Shining Hope’s work • Supports the development and engagement of a Local Advisory Committee. • Develops and maintains a high level understanding of donor priorities, country plans etc • Maintains and extends participation with key donors • Ensures submission of timely and high quality proposals and reports • Monitors and identifys sources of potential in-country funding to support and accelerate scale up • Provides timely and effective oversight of the financial position of all programs Candidate Requirements • Strong work experiences: We are seeking an entrepreneur who has previously grown an operation from scratch to hundreds of staff, or who has managed many staff members before with a high responsibility for growth and performance– And we want someone who wants to go back to scratch, and do it again with a high-impact start up, instead of managing a large existing operation. • A pleasant personality demonstrating humility: a willingnessto learn and listen to the community members. We value humility and likeability, and wish to be joined by leaders that value the same. • Minimum Bachelor’s degree, higher academic qualificationpreferred • Passion for Shining Hope’s mission and work and ability to work comfortably in the Kibera slums and other Nairobi slums • Experience with community development and passion for grassroots-inspired transformation, especially in urban slums • Articulate and advocate for issues that face the urban poor, especially women and girls. • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to managemultiple responsibilities; comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and committed to meeting deadlines and creating and improving processes • Willingness to take ownership of projects and significantly drive progress of the organization 175 Varick Street, New York City, NY 10014 (860) 218 – 9854 Page 3 of 3 • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationshipswith a myriad of stakeholders at all levels • Excellent communication (verbal and written), presentation,and analytical skills.
