Young people want to read. They are hungry for books, but those books must speak to their conditions, style and thinking. Those books must be relevant. They must not be written to appease book critics and commentators, but to document the daily thoughts, aspirations and insecurities of the youth. Im saying the determinant of a good book in the context of the youth is its relevance - how well they relate to and see themselves in it. Young people have proved in their support for youth-written books such as Kopanos, Malaikas (and to a certain extent mine) that they are book lovers. Question is: do we write for the youth audience or those journalists who will give us good reviews in the newspapers?
