Your Turn #246 (Visit the Cablevision Editorials website at cveditorials/LI) A recent Suffolk County drug bust reminded us of the continuing scourge of heroin addiction on Long Island. We supported Sen. Kemp Hannons proposal to require health insurers to fund long term, inpatient treatment programs to fight this epidemic. Jaclyn of Manorville responds: Health insurers are wrong thinking that outpatient treatment is effective. My own recovery experience (says) that inpatient treatment-long term-is the most effective. Until better treatment facilities are available, this epidemic (will) get worse. More action needs to take place on Long Island to help those who are suffering. Gina from Merrick writes: Heroin has been ruling low income households for decades. Now that heroin is migrating to the suburbs, it is suddenly a problem. We need to help heroin addicts everywhere. And from Ellen McMahon of Huntington Station: Many are addicted to heroin because of pain pills doctors are prescribing like candy. They cannot afford that expensive habit and resort to heroin. Hold doctors and pharmaceutical companies responsible. In fact, we explored this problem in our Editorial series Do No Harm which you can find at CablevisionEditorials. And while youre there, leave a comment, and make it your turn. Presented by Peter Kohler May 23, 2014
