Your movies too small, You need a name, Its a drama, Theres not enough action, Theres too much drug content, You need to slow it down, You need to speed it up. I have heard every single one of these comments on various projects I have written, been involved with or had the pleasure of watching a transpire. I have been working my ass off for 7 years in this business trying to understand how and or what the path to success is and have sacrificed so many things in both my personal life and business in order to make it in this business. Ive had ups and many more downs. At times Ive made money and at times Ive barely gotten by. What I have taken from all of my experiences in this business is this..... There is no rhyme or reason for anything. NOTHING! You can be a movie star and a horrible actor. You can be a horrible writer and have a successful career. You can make a flop and get a promotion. or the other hand, you can be a tremendous actor and get no recognition. You can be a talented writer and get stomped on. You can have a project with an amazing team behind it and it just go away.... There is NO PATH mainly because the business of Hollywood is in fact a subjective business. One person in power may love a project ten others have hatted or vice versa. Look at Jeremy Renner, who has been a great actor for the last 20 years. It took the Hurt Locker and The Town to make him a public figure/Movie star. He received an Oscar Nom and was on his way to the A-List.. But why isnt he? Why after he takes over 2 massive franchises, hes still not a house hold name? In my opinion, because he doesnt Play the game. Hes not in the tabloids and hes not dating another A-lister.. So the movie going public doesnt care.. They want to see their favorite Tabloid star in Mission Impossible and Bourne, not some extremely talented actor who they dont know. But then theres the opposite of that. Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrences new film barely sold because it supposedly sucked. Hollywood has been designed like an exclusive club with extremely high walls and guarded by the most powerful people in the biz.. NO ONE makes it into that club unless they prospect into the club. During which you will jump over fences, bow down to the greats, work for free, kiss ass and out perform and out shine everyone else. and even still you likely wont make it! Someone on in that club, someone behind those high high walls must take your hand and guide you through those doors with their blessing. and guess what? Even then, theres a small chance in hell you will make it. So point is this... Dont try and figure out a method or a system, there is none. Instead, stay true to who you are, what your passion and talents are and find yourself within your gifts.. Its only then you will make it as an artist, actor, writer, director or even a producer. Dont follow then norm that is so often wrong and in fact not normal.
