Youth of Kilifi County! Kindly listen.... If you didnt know, kindly know! That Kenyas Unemployment Rate rose from 12.7% in 2006 to 40% in 2011. This is a worst economic scenario comparing to developed countries like Switzerland with its unemployment rate that reduced to 3.5% by 14th August this year. The Kenyans rate has not decreased but increased. This is made possible by many factors. One being Kenyas population dynamics according to the Kenya Bureau of Statistics. This suggest two things: one, you may be educated or skilled but end up unemployed since the labour market is too saturated and unable to absorb your skills. Or you may be uneducated and unskilled then end up being unemployed since the pressure for wage employment exceeds the opportunities available for you. My observation reveals that most of you (if not all) get educated with atmost expectation of getting employed. And even those uneducated still desire to get employed. The obsession for wage employment amongst many of our youth from Kilifi (and from other counties) is honest for any job seeking youth. But this expectation might be one of the key driver of your economic calamity. But if you dont know, kindly know that you are still unlucky. Your county government have failed to harvest your hope for better livelihood and economic independence. Through its leadership, the government has failed to transform its promises into programmes that are able to nurture your potential and energy for the better. Two years after devolution, your County has failed to raise as a unit of economic productivity Instead, it is a unit of consumption. Thats not enough. Most of your political leaders whether an MCA or MP, or Women Rep or Senator or Governor wouldnt like to see you empowered economically. Instead, they will be happy to see you begging from them handouts. Why? They want stone throwers, bouncers, assaulters in the next election. They want to buy your vote for 50 shillings. They want you to heckle their competitors. They want you to cheer them up during their campaign rallies while giving you false promises. Now that you know that it is difficult to access the job you desire, what next? Its a big challenge for you and I. It is time for you to embrace a positive attitude as well as a culture of entrepreneurship. It is time you appreciate that alternative career can pay. It is time to realize that your ability, capability, potential, talent, and skills if well tapped can help you raise from where you are to another level. Not the political promise. Not the politicians handout. Do you know that Comedian Millionaires like Daniel Ndambuki aka Churchill, MC Jessie and Eric Omondis as well as Artistes like Nameless and his wife Wahu are graduates like you whom you call yourself educated. They opted for alternative career. Since Poor culture of entrepreneurship made possible by negative attitude is one of the many drivers of youth unemployment and poverty. You can change this. With funds flowing to the grassroots in different forms (challenges not withstanding), get the right advisers, think hard and come up with self or group initiatives that can change your economic fortunes and that of others. Its your choice.
