YouthBuild Program Transforms Lives and Builds Futures! Summer Work Academy building a Habitat for Humanity home in Granger starts Monday, June 17. YouthBuild Yakima Valley team member learns construction skills in preparation for building a Habitat for Humanity home this summer in Granger, WA. Toppenish, WA —YouthBuild Yakima Valley is counting down to their culminating Summer Work Academy! Northwest Community Action Center (NCAC), a division of Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic, is the lead agency which has partnered with the Toppenish, Wapato, Granger and Grandview school districts along with the Yakima Valley Technical Skills Center (YV-TECH) to provide the “student manpower” to join Yakima Habitat For Humanity in the building of a “Habitat” home over the next eight weeks. The house being constructed at 111 B Street in Granger, WA will provide YouthBuild students an opportunity to apply their construction skills as construction staff that they have been learning over the last six months through YV-TECH, while continuing their academic pursuits. This summer work experience will start Monday, June 17 and end August 29. During this time, YouthBuild will also start recruiting for its next class in the Lower Valley, which is planned to begin in early October. The Toppenish Community Food Bank is also assisting by providing meals for the students. YouthBuild is a national program funded through grants from the US Department of Labor – Employment and Training Administration that balances in-school learning that leads to the achievement of a high school diploma or passing the General Education Development (GED) test and occupational skills training that prepares youth for career placement. YouthBuild trains participants in construction trades, teaches work readiness and leadership skills. Hands-on construction training takes place while building affordable housing within the community. Participants who successfully complete the program receive a nationally recognized construction trade certification. To be eligible for participation, individuals must be 16 – 24 years of age, low income, a high school dropout or basic skills deficient, a resident of Wapato, Toppenish, Granger or Grandview and motivated to make a positive change in their lives. Those selected for the program will earn a stipend for participation and will learn skills that will last for a lifetime. To learn more about the YouthBuild Program, call (509) 910-7873.
